Crystal Coast Horses Photography Workshop
Join wildlife photographers Neil Jernigan and John Mauser for an unforgettable five-day photography workshop on North Carolina's beautiful Crystal Coast. Together, we'll explore the remote beaches and salt marshes of Shackleford Banks, home to the island's legendary wild horses and some of the most scenic coastal landscapes on the East Coast.
Limited to just six photographers, this workshop is designed to provide a relaxed, personalized learning experience with plenty of one-on-one instruction. Whether you're looking to improve your wildlife photography, refine your composition, or simply experience one of North Carolina's most iconic destinations, you'll have two experienced instructors available throughout the trip to help you elevate your photography.
Throughout the workshop, we'll photograph the island's wild horses in a variety of natural settings—from windswept dunes and sandy beaches to tidal marshes and maritime forests. Depending on conditions, we'll also seek opportunities to photograph shorebirds, coastal landscapes, seascapes, and the unique details that make Shackleford Banks such a remarkable place.
Our days will be built around the best light, taking advantage of sunrise and sunset while allowing time to rest, review images, discuss techniques, and prepare for each field session. Along the way, we'll cover topics including wildlife behavior, camera settings, composition, exposure, autofocus techniques, working with changing coastal light, and creating compelling storytelling images.
This is more than just a photography workshop—it's an opportunity to slow down, immerse yourself in one of North Carolina's most pristine coastal environments, and learn alongside two passionate wildlife photographers who are dedicated to helping you create your best images.

What You’ll Learn
Wildlife Behavior & Field Craft: Understanding horse behavior to anticipate action.
Camera Settings: Dialing in the right shutter speeds, apertures, and ISO for fast-changing light.
Composition: Capturing compelling images of horses in landscapes and close-up.
Lighting: Working in all lighting conditions with a target of early morning and late evening light for dramatic results.

FAQs
What size lenses do I need?
We will be photographing elk, some at close range and others at great distances. I recommend between 200-500mm. If you would like to contact me to let me know what you have I would be happy to help out. If you have only wide angle lenses or less than 200mm, I would recommend renting a telephoto lens. I wouldn't purchase a lens specifically for this workshop. Rental is the best way to go. I recommend www.lensrentals.com
What equipment do you recommend to bring?
Water proof waders. Telephoto & Wide angle lenses, tripod, any photography gadgets that you normally would. I would rather need it & have it than need it and not have it!
What skill level is required?
All skill levels are welcome! Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned photographer, you’ll receive instruction tailored to your experience.
How physically demanding is the workshop?
Moderate. Most shooting locations are accessible with short walks, but participants should be comfortable carrying their gear outdoors.
What type of clothing should I wear?
This workshop is in early fall, so the mornings could be cool & mid-day could be warm. We are also around and sometimes in the very cold water for river crossings, rubber boots/hip waders are recommended too!
