Casting Bear Tracks

Several weeks back I met up with Tom Harrison from the North Carolina Black Bear Festival. We went out in search of black bear, of course, right!? We found and photographed over 50 different bear! But the highlight of the trip for me was learning how to create casts of bear tracks! This was a first for me but definitely not the last! So I decided I would share the experience here with you.

First you need to find the perfect track. Then create a wall of dirt around it.

Next you will need to mix some Plaster of Paris. Follow the directions for the correct amount of water & plaster.

After mixing it very thoroughly, you will then need to slowly pour the mixture into the track.

Insert into the oven at 350 degrees F. … oh wait… sorry, that’s just the temperature felt like that day, haha! Now just let it set and it will harden within about 30 minutes or so.

We washed off our casts in the canal and voila! You’ve got yourself a bear track cast!!
