Earth Day 2017 (Birthday Trip)

Saturday was Earth Day 2017 & the day before my birthday. To celebrate both, Candace & I took a small day trip out to Alligator River, Lake Mattamuskeet & Pocosin Lakes NWR's. We started the morning with a beautiful Barred Owl, water moccasin, wood ducks, three bear and many other animals.

After riding around the refuge for a couple hours we headed to Mill tail Creek. We spent around 2-3 hours on the water, enjoying the beautiful sights & sounds. Kayaking is my new favorite thing to do and new favorite way to photograph. Hoping to do more of this year.

This American Bittern was hunting near the edge of the creek and didn't mind our presence

My goal was to find and photograph alligators. Goal achieved. We only saw this one, it was around 4 feet long.

Prothonotary Warblers could be heard all day in the swamps & creeks

We finished the day out at Pungo where we saw one bear, a couple deer and lots of dragonflies. As the sun was beginning to set they were landing on this dead tree. I loved the pattern of the dragonflies & texture of the wood.

Until next time,

Cheers, -Neil
