Lake Waccamaw State Park

A couple weeks ago, my wife & I set out to find alligators. Being that we're in North Carolina we have essentially two regions to go to. Either Merchants Millpond on the Virginia border or the Wilmington area. So we decided on Lake Waccamaw State Park just outside Wilmington.

The day was very overcast and not as warm as had been. We only saw about 6 alligators & they were decent sized too!

There were a couple small gators hanging around a nesting colony of Little Blue Herons. This was the first time I've photographed a colony of Little Blues. The white ones below are immature. Alligators will hang around bird nesting colonies and wait. If a young bird falls in the water, well you get the picture.

This great egret also had a nest in the colony.
