Elk of the Cataloochee Valley

The second half of our trip, we spent a couple days at Cataloochee Valley, just outside Maggie Valley, NC. Some people don't realize that Elk were originally native to North Carolina. Due to over hunting and loss of habitat they became extinct in our part of the US. The last known elk was killed in North Carolina in the late 1700s. In 2001, the National Park Service re-introduced 25 elk and in 2002 they brought in 27 more. The heard is now over 150 animals! To hear these majestic animals bugle in the valley, is just simply magical! Here are a few of my favorite photographs from this trip.
